Grade A vs Grade B vs Grade C: What Refurbished Grades Really Mean
Understanding Refurbished Grades
If you have ever shopped for refurbished electronics, you have probably seen products labelled Grade A, Grade B, or Grade C. But what do these grades actually mean? And more importantly, which grade should you buy?
At Smart Clear Vision, we grade every product ourselves after hands-on testing. This guide explains exactly what each grade means, what to expect, and how to choose the right grade for your needs.
Grade A — Excellent Condition
Grade A is our highest grade. These products are in excellent cosmetic condition with minimal or no visible marks. The screen is free from defects, and all features work perfectly.
What to expect:
- Screen in perfect or near-perfect condition — no dead pixels, no backlight bleed
- Casing may have very faint marks only visible under close inspection
- All ports, buttons, and features fully functional
- Smart TV features working (where applicable)
- Remote control included (where available)
Best for: Living rooms, main entertainment setups, or anywhere the TV will be on prominent display. If you want the closest experience to buying new, Grade A is the way to go.
Grade B — Good Condition
Grade B products are in good overall condition. The screen performs identically to Grade A — the difference is purely cosmetic, limited to the casing or bezel.
What to expect:
- Screen in excellent condition — same quality as Grade A
- Minor cosmetic marks on the casing, bezel, or back panel
- Marks are typically small scuffs or light scratches on plastic surfaces
- All ports, buttons, and features fully functional
- Smart TV features working (where applicable)
Best for: Bedrooms, spare rooms, home offices, or wall-mounted setups where the sides and back of the TV are not visible. Grade B offers the best balance of value and condition.
Grade C — Fair Condition
Grade C products show more noticeable cosmetic wear but remain fully functional. The key point: these TVs still work perfectly. You are paying less for cosmetic imperfections, not for reduced performance.
What to expect:
- Screen generally in good condition — may have very minor imperfections that do not affect normal viewing
- More visible cosmetic wear on the casing — scratches, scuffs, or marks
- All core features and ports working
- May be missing non-essential accessories
Best for: Budget-conscious buyers, rental properties, children's rooms, garages, or commercial spaces like gyms and waiting rooms. Grade C delivers the biggest savings while still providing a fully working product.
The NS Suffix — No Stand
You may notice some products have "NS" after the grade (e.g., Grade ANS, Grade BNS). This simply means the TV comes without its original stand. The TV itself is graded exactly the same way — the NS just indicates you will need to wall-mount it or source a compatible stand separately.
No-stand units are often our best value products. A universal TV wall mount costs £15-30 and takes 20 minutes to install. If you were planning to wall-mount anyway, an NS grade can save you money with zero compromise.
Same Warranty, Every Grade
This is important: every product comes with the same 90-day warranty regardless of grade. Whether you buy Grade A, Grade B, or Grade C, you are covered. If anything goes wrong with the functionality of the product within 90 days, we will sort it out.
We also offer 30-day returns on all grades. If the product does not meet your expectations, you can return it.
How We Grade: The Process
Every TV and monitor that arrives at Smart Clear Vision goes through a standardised testing process:
- Power and boot test — Does it turn on reliably? Does the smart platform load?
- Screen inspection — Checked against test patterns for dead pixels, backlight uniformity, colour accuracy, and image retention
- Port testing — Every HDMI, USB, and audio port tested with known-good cables and devices
- Remote and controls — Physical buttons and remote control tested
- Wi-Fi and network — Wireless connectivity tested where applicable
- Cosmetic assessment — Detailed inspection under good lighting to assign the cosmetic grade
Products that fail any functional test are not sold. We only sell TVs and monitors that pass every functional check. The grade reflects cosmetics only.
Which Grade Should You Choose?
It comes down to two questions: where will the TV go, and how important is cosmetic perfection to you?
For most buyers, Grade B offers the sweet spot. You get a perfect screen and full functionality with only minor cosmetic marks that are typically invisible during normal use. The price difference between Grade A and Grade B can be £30-60 — money better spent on a soundbar or streaming subscription.
If budget is the priority, Grade C is genuinely excellent value. You get the same picture, the same smart features, and the same warranty. The only trade-off is cosmetic.
